Messenger bags

Yeah, so went to the auto junk yard u pull it type place and snagged some old seatbelts. I got a burnt orange one (my current fave color) and also a black one out of a BMW. The deal is, I got 17 feet of seatbelt between the two of them, as well as 2 sets of buckles. I figure I can use the buckles for my first 2 bags, then if I make another, it can just be buckle-less and just use the full strap----like on a Timbuk2.

The downside is, I paid $2 admission, then $9 for each seatbelt. So, $20 for 2 buckles and 17 feet of webbing. The new seatbelt webbing is sold for .35 a foot. 17ft * .35 = $5.95. Maybe the buckles are worth the extra $7 each? But the story is, although youre being eco-friendly by scavenging these parts, its not quite dollar friendly. A more eco-solution would be too hunt Craigslist for people giving away car seats, or whole cars and scavenging the belts out of there.

Also, I read on Freitag bags, that they reuse a pre-used airbag. I saw many there that were pre-used, and thought about cutting them off the steering wheel, but was unsure a) how much they were going to charge me for them (althought i dont think they should) and b) what would I use it for?

These bags gotta be cheap. So reusing is priority number 1.

Also, I went and bought some thread, burnt orange and white. I talked to the lady at the craft store, and she suggested regular thread, as it would be easier on my machine and wouldnt bind like would happen if I used heavier thread. We'll see how it works.

Making a messenger bag...

...is the latest project.

I own a Chrome bag, yes, and I like it yes, but i like messing with things too.

I found a site that talked about making your own bag, and I thought I could do this (and have been wanting to for some time).

Next up, im going to get some seatbelts from a local U pull it kind of auto dismantler, and looking for old seatbelts wherever I go.
